Labour Councillors fear further cuts to Council funding

Councillor Kay Burley (Labour councillor for Kempston Central & East) told the Full Council on 12th October that she was concerned about possible cuts to council services as a result of the Tories catastrophic mini-budget costing the British public billions.

Cllr Burley said: “We’re all being affected by the situation at the moment, and you can call it scaremongering or not. But the point is it is scary and it is real, and nobody knows what’s going to happen. People that we represent are really worried, we’re worried ourselves.

"We’re short of money as a council and we’re going to have to pull in the belts and probably cut some of the services. And as councillors we are going to be blamed for it, all of us here [in the council] are going to be blamed for it.

“It’s not our fault as a council that this is the situation, it’s the Conservative government’s fault. People who support the Conservative government should know that it’s the government’s fault, they’ve lost control of this situation nationally.

“And we, as local government, wherever we are in the country as local government, will be blamed for doing the dirty work. We need to let the electorate know who’s fault this situation is, it’s absolutely outrageous.

"I don’t care that they keep saying ‘oh, it’s the war in Ukraine, etc.’, it isn’t. It might not help, but that is not the reason.

“We’ve just got an incompetent government who is making life very, very, difficult for ordinary people who are finding it very hard to understand how this government has got in such a mess,” she said.
