Widespread use and abuse of zero-hours contracts

I believe we need a real debate in Bedford about the widespread use and abuse of zero-hours contracts and how it affects workers both locally and nationally.

There has been an alarming, three-fold increase in these contracts during the present coalition government, leaving an estimated one million families across the UK unable to plan for the future or know if they can afford basic necessities week-by-week. I know of many workers in Castle Ward and other parts of Bedford who are seriously affected by this.

The widespread use of zero-hours contracts is incompatible with building a loyal, skilled and productive workforce with a minority of employers misusing zero-hours contracts as a crude way of cutting costs or managing staff.

Most people who are on this type of contract often need a second job to make ends meet. However, this unfair system keeps people off the unemployment statistics – perhaps why they are so popular with this Tory-LibDem coalition government!
