Register now to vote

The mayoral and local council elections in May will determine how Bedford Borough Council is run for the next four years.

It is important that every resident in the borough has the chance for their voice to be heard.

This includes citizens of European Union and Commonwealth countries who live here and pay council tax, many of whom aren't aware of their local entitlement to vote. Just like British nationals living in European Union member states are entitled to vote in EU countries' local elections, EU citizens are entitled to vote in local elections in Britain. Commonwealth citizens, too, can vote -- in both the local elections and the general election.

However, if you are not registered to vote, then you won't be able to have your say. I urge members of these communities -- and all eligible people -- to register now and, then, to use their vote in May.

Visit or ring Bedford Borough Hall on 01234 267 422.
