Below are the comments at the time he became the Labour Candidate in May 2017.
Councillor Mohammad Yasin was selected as Labour’s candidate for the Bedford & Kempston constituency to stand in this June’s general election.
Cllr Yasin lives in Queen’s Park in Bedford and has been a Labour Borough Councillor for Queen’s Park for 11 years. He is Portfolio Holder for Adult Services and Housing at Bedford Borough Council, and is a former Speaker of the Council. Experienced and knowledgeable, he is dedicated to serving the community and fighting for the best for Bedford and Kempston residents.
Speaking after the selection, Cllr Yasin said:
“I’ve lived in Bedford for over 25 years and know the pressures that many people here face. As their MP, I will do all I can to defend them from the current, savage Tory cuts.”
“Residents need to live in a safe and prosperous community with opportunities for everyone. My children attend local schools and I was shocked by the Tory proposals to cut £7.8m funding from state schools throughout Bedford Borough - an average of £340 per pupil.”
“This Tory government has overseen the biggest cuts to our public services in a generation. The NHS and social care is in crisis. Speaking to local people I know everyone is concerned about the ongoing threat to retaining key services at Bedford Hospital. We MUST retain maternity, paediatric and A&E services here as we have a growing population with over 3000 births here last year.”
“I’m committed to fighting for proper funding for social care in Bedford and Kempston. Local Government funding has been brutally slashed since 2010, heaping huge pressure on social workers and care staff at a time there is increasing demand for these services.”
“People here in Bedford & Kempston need a local member of parliament who will put them first. I will work tirelessly between now and June 8th to let local people know that this general election will be a choice between a Labour Party that will stand up for the people of Bedford & Kempston or a Conservative Party that only looks after the privileged few.”
Ian Nicholls, Chair of Bedford & Kempston constituency Labour Party, added:
“I welcome the appointment of Mohammad Yasin as Labour’s Candidate for Bedford & Kempston for June’s general election. I know that if elected on the 8th June, Yasin will put this area first and will be a committed, local, full time MP – that’s what Bedford and Kempston deserves.”
