Italian consular services return to Bedford

luigi_2.jpgAfter nearly two years of campaigning led by Dr Luigi Reale, a new Italian Honorary Consul office has opened in Bedford.

Luigi Reale, who has been leading the campaign to get consular services back in Bedford, said: "It is a great honour for me to have Gaetano as the first Honorary Consul in Bedford and it is a testimony to the will of all those who campaigned with me – we have achieved the best possible outcome. The campaign has come to an end and we give all our trust and support to Gaetano who needs to do his work with no pressure from us."

When the Bedford vice-consulate closed in September 2012 the Italian community in Bedford held protests about the closure and local people have been campaigning to have consular services return.

Bedford Borough Labour Group supported the campaign. Group Leader, Councillor Sue Oliver, made her views very clear that having no consular services was unacceptable and appealed for offices to return.
Sue said, "I am delighted Italian consular services have returned to Bedford. It was unfair for frail and elderly people to have to go to London. Now they have local services."
