Horrified at limit of mobile patrols

Parking across driveways, so residents cannot get to work. Parking on the pavement so that pedestrians, wheelchair users, and parents with pushchairs are obstructed. Dangerous parking on corners. These are all frequent complaints we receive from Kempston residents.

Most motorists are law-abiding, but a minority of selfish individuals cause havoc by irresponsible parking.

Much of Kempston has limited off-road parking and there are no permanent officers to enforce restrictions. Therefore, residents are heavily reliant on the council's mobile patrols to give out tickets and keep unlawful parking under control.

No-one likes issuing penalties but unfortunately some people only respond to sanctions.

We are horrified by the coalition government's proposals to limit the use of mobile parking  controls. They carried out a national consultation about limiting these patrols and most of the groups consulted did not support a ban. Yet, the government response seems to ignore the findings and press on regardless.

The council has made the right decision in keeping its enforcement vehicles. For Kempston especially, they are essential. We are on the side of responsible, law-abiding residents and reject this daft ideological move which risks a chaotic free-for-all on our streets.
