Fighting fire with fire

Graham_Tranquada.jpgShame on the coalition government for its refusal to negotiate over pension provision for the fire service.

The insistence that firefighters work operationally until 60 years old to achieve full pension provision is unworkable and unsafe for firefighters and the public.

It is out of frustration that the Fire Brigades Union is taking strike action. The response from the coalition government has been refusal to talk.

This dispute has been long-running and the governments of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are prepared to negotiate.

In recognition of our support for our local fire service, it is time for our local politicians to call on the coalition government to return to the negotiating table and give the fire service proper pension provision.
