Here is the farewell message I sent to the officers and staff of Bedfordshire Police. It equally applies to the people of the county, amongst whom I am particularly grateful to those who supported me in my role, including by voting for me last week:
I feel incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to serve as your Police and Crime Commissioner over the last three and a half years, not least because it gave me the chance to work alongside the remarkable people who are Bedfordshire Police.
As I leave office I take great satisfaction from the fact that there is less burglary and robbery than when I was elected, higher victim satisfaction with the force, improved emergency response performance and higher reporting of 'hidden harms' such as hate crimes, serious sexual offences and domestic abuse. The fact that the significant priorities I set have been delivered is a tremendous tribute to the professionalism and dedication of everyone in the force, particularly as simultaneously £25million of savings were found and force strength reduced.
I wish my successor Kathryn Holloway Godspeed with her fantastic new role, but especially with the challenge of securing adequate government funding for the force so that it can provide the public with the visible community policing that is so important.
